Professor Jonathan Cooper

Professor Jonathan Cooper holds The Wolfson Chair in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Glasgow and was a Healthcare Technologies EPSRC Fellow (EPSRC EP/K027611). His major research interests are in imaging, ultrasonics and medical diagnostics, which have led to Invited Plenary talks at Photonics West (2012), IEEE MEMS (2017) microTAS (2018) and IEEE Ultrasonics (2019). He currently holds a joint grant with Reboud (EPSRC EP/K027611) in the development of novel diagnostics in rural communities in Africa. He has spun out a number of start-up companies, including SAW-dx, Mode-dx, Clyde Biosciences and Acu-Flow. He has published >250 publications with an ISI h-index of 49. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
He is an Emeritus Vice Principal and has developed his Management and Leadership, having previously held the position of VP (PVC) in Knowledge Exchange and Innovation between 2014-2019, as part of the University of Glasgow’s senior executive team. In this role he chaired the University’s Research Policy and Strategy group, as well as developing the Institutional Strategies on Knowledge Exchange and Global Challenges. He currently sits on EPSRC’s Healthcare Technology Strategic Advisory Team (2016-2020) and has previously served as a panel member on RAE2008 (Electrical Engineering), REF2014 (General Engineering) and REF 2021 (Engineering). He has also led major collaborative research funding including as Impact Champion on a Programme Grant (EPSRC EP/P001114) and through the EU Framework programmes (IV-VIII) as well most recently an ERC Advanced Grant 2014-2019.
